UNT Powerlifting

Challenge

Create the University of North Texas Powerlifting Team shirts and branding elements while incorporating the school colors and mascot. It was requested to showcase strength, power, and muscles with an eye catching design and bold text. Restricted to only using the full name University Of North Texas or abbreviated to UNT.

Exploration

I took inspiration from squat lifting photos, symmetry of designs, and traditional tattoos of eagles. This helped me to incorporate its meaning to the design by bringing a sense of strength, courage, and perseverance.

Digital Drafts

For the first concept, I constructed half of the man first then duplicated and mirrored his body to make sure he is symmetrical.

This first draft included the man with eagle wings to incorporate the requested element of having the mascot. However, when I checked up with the team, they concluded that the wings made him look like a fairy.

Now that I removed the wings and moved onto adding the text, the team requested changes to the character’s gender. For gender equality, I replaced the male head with an eagle head to represent the school’s mascot.

 Solution

With the character finalized with the eagle head and framing the text in an outlined circle, this gave the text and graphic a clear structure.

With the wings I removed from the character, I replaced it with the weight plates for the second design. Using the same typeface, I also framed the bottom text with an outlined stroke to complement the first design. For both final designs I kept the text and strokes white, with the graphics in UNT green.

I also included a sports water bottle with the weight plate design and finished it off with a green top to fit the color scheme. Lastly, I designed a sports duffel bag with green straps with the phrase “UNT Powerlifting” around the whole bag so it’s visible at all angles.

 Reflection

During this project I was reminded that graphic designers are problem solvers. When coming across the issue of the male head in one of my concepts, I had to think outside the box and create a solution that pleased the whole team.
